This is written in one of the conference halls in Bellagio Hotel, on a borrowed laptop. This keybord doesn't have either aa, ae or oe, so I'll write in english.
I'm sorry you haven't heard from us in such a long while. The connection in our Monte Carlo-room has been down.
Because what happened today is more interesting (though less fun) than what happened yesterday and the day before that, I'll skip them for the time being.
This is more or less what happened today. Jakob and I went to the IHOP (International House of Pancakes) to have brunch. It was great, and heavy. We decided to walk the calories off, and when we got to Paris (it was great, on the outside). At 10.30 or something I got a call from Leszek saying there was a fire in Monte Carlo, and that Zofia was really shaken up since she doesn't speak english, she had no clue as to what was going on. He asked us to get there to meet her. When we got nearer to our hotel, I saw some grey smoke in the sky in our direction. Sure, it was a pillar of black smoke coming up from the backside of Monte Carlo. Coming closer, we even saw flames. A big part of the Strip was closed for traffic, and noone was allowed in the Monte Carlo. We met Zofia, and took a cab to the convention centre, where Leszek was. She was crying, and appearently she had been in the room when the alarm went off. She went out in the corridor, and there were people screaming and running to the stairs. She grabbed her purse and ran down the stairs - remember, we were all at the 29th floor.
At the convention centre, we watched the news. They said the fire had started on the roof, and since stuff was falling down, the lower floors caught fire aswell. The roof was burning, and the top five or so floors. The Monte Carlo has three wings: a south, west and a north one. The fire was mostly on the west and south wings, and we lived in the north one, but Leszek and Zofia was in the south one.
At one o'clock the fair, World of Concrete, was over and we all helped out tearing the display for a few hours. That was good, I think, because it got our minds off the whole fire business. Did our room catch fire? If not, was there a sprinkler system in the room? Where will we stay? For how long? When do we get our luggage back? When most of the display was apacked, we went to the MGM Grand, as the news said all guests at Monte Carlo should. We got there, but they only put us in a shuttle bus. The chauffeurs asked us: Treasure Island or Bellagio? For us, that's not really a decision. Bellagio is luxurious and a whole lot better than Monte Carlo. Treasure Island is tacky, it's the one with the Pirate-theme. We got here, checked in, got up the elevator and voila! Our room is beautiful, it has curtains that open with a button on the wall, the bathroom has double sinks, and the bathtub and shower are separate. I will post pictures of it as soon as I can.
Summa summarum. There was a fire in our floor at the Monte Carlo. We weren't there, and no harm was done to us at all. We all have our passports, my cellphone works (hopefully a few days more), and we're all ok. The room is great (though the view is not as fantastic)! The staff here are talking about reimbursements for the lost stuff, and that we can buy things that we need for tonight and tomorrow morning which they will pay for later.
Just now the information girl here in the convention room told us the Monte Carlo will maybe let guests in at 21.00 (2,5 hours from now) to pick up their luggage. My guess is that only applies for guests at the lower floors. When we ask, they don't know anything about the damage or anything.
So, I'm ok, Jakob is ok, Leszek and Zofia are ok, and hopefully we will have everything figured out before we leave Las Vegas.
We will keep you posted!
